 What is an Apostille?

  •  Apostille stands for “certification” in French. This document is issued by the Secretary of State and authenticates the signature of a public official on a document for use in another country. An Apostille does not validate the contents of the document.

What is Authentication?

  • Federal - Authentication certificates are for documents to be used in countries that do not participate in the 1961 Hague Convention Treaty.

Requirements

  • CA Birth and Death certificates require the signatures of County Clerks and their deputies, County Recorders and their deputies, and the State Registrar (California Department of Public Health). Signatures, names, and titles of public officials can be found at the bottom of a birth or death certificate
  • School Transcripts/Diplomas the documents must be notarized by the school that is issuing the document.
  • Federal - All documents in a foreign language must be translated into English by a certified translator and notarized as a true translation.
